Score Methodology

The LiveAbility Score is a weighted composite of up to 8 dimensions, each normalized to a 0-100 percentile rank where 100 = best in the nation for that metric. When a metro lacks a dimension, that weight is dropped and the rest are renormalized; the Dims column records the population each composite actually used.

Cost of Living (18%) - BEA Regional Price Parities, metro-level
Jobs (15%) - BLS OES median annual wages, metro-level
Housing (15%) - HUD Fair Market Rents (2BR) - metro-level
Safety (12%) - FBI UCR violent crime rate, state-level
Schools (12%) - NCES student-teacher ratio, state-level
Air Quality (10%) - EPA AQS annual median AQI, metro-level
Hazard Risk (10%) - FEMA disaster + NOAA storm frequency, state-level
Climate (8%) - NOAA 1991-2020 Normals comfort index, city-level

Want to change the weights? Use the City Discovery Tool to re-rank metros based on your personal priorities.

How to use this ranking

A single composite is a starting point, not a verdict, re-rank it by what matters to you.

  • The default weights are ours; turn jobs up and climate down to match your own priorities and re-rank every metro instantly. City Finder
  • Once you have a shortlist, put two metros on the same scorecard across cost, rent, wages, safety and schools. Compare metros
  • See the full federal-data profile behind the #1 metro, Grand Forks. View Grand Forks

Scores are federal-data percentiles, not a recommendation. Safety, schools and hazard use state-level data where metro-level isn't published. Always visit before you move.
